Seven years ago during one of my relapses, I was stuck in a downward spiral. I had become this lonely and miserable person full of self-loathing. As I struggled through yet another first 30 days of sobriety, I staring making homemade bangles bearing the Serenity Prayer. They were much cruder versions of the ones you see on my website today. I used to heat-form pieces of acrylic rods and handwrite the prayer on the underside of the bangle. This was the beginning of my obsession with plastics. I had always wanted to make my own bangles from scratch using a casting process, but this was a good start.
The inspiration to craft my own bangles came about two years ago. I noticed a call for Los Angeles artists for an upcoming exhibition at the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum called, "Healing, a Cultural Exploration." I thought the premise of self-healing was important to me and so many others in recovery. To me, one of the best-known yet under-represented forms of self-healing today are recovery groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, and so many others.
I decided to enter the bangles but only after I learned to cast them from scratch to ensure they'd be up to museum standards. Instead of handwriting the prayer on the underside of the bangle, I began embedding the Serenity Prayer inside each piece as an insert or a message suspended permanently inside the resin. It took over 5 month's of trial and error before I got anywhere near consistent and beautiful results. That difficult 5-month process was something I would have never been able to do before sobriety!
My submission was chosen as part of the exhibition. The exhibition's opening was extremely well-attended. I talked to people there who are in AA and NA and who told me they'd been looking for recovery touchstones but that the generally available merchandise was uninspiring. I got a few orders right then and there for the bangles and eventually offered the Serenity Prayer bangles on line.

Bangles are available in clear, silver or gold tone with the prayer embedded within each resin bangle. Measurements: 3/8" (10 mm) wide, inside diameter 2 1/2" (63 mm). This is the standard bangle size found in most stores.
